Courses at the ESHG Conference 2027

A variety of hands-on courses are offered in connection with the ESHG Conference. Some are organised entirely by the ESHG, others by educational organisations that provide high-quality genomics education.

Please note that these courses are not part of the conference programme. A separate registration and payment is required for each course.

ESHG Courses

Education has a prominent place at the annual ESHG meetings. While the conference programme focuses on the latest developments, the ESHG pre-meeting courses offer on-site education and training in the more basic subjects in human genetics. Introductory lectures are followed by tasks where participants directly apply what they learned to practical examples.

1Clinical NGS Data Interpretation Course📅 Thu 10 – Fri 11 June 2027📍 TBC

General information

  • Focus on the clinical interpretation of variants – only basics of sequencing technologies, not the analysis, not ELSI issues
  • Practical course with an emphasis on working with real data and cases
  • Focus on WES and WGS data

Learning goals: how to interpret SNVs and CNVs from WES data; which practical tools and databases for WES interpretation are freely available; how the interpretation of WGS data differs from WES data.

2Unleashing the Power of Large-Scale Genomic Public Databases📅 Fri 11 June 2027📍 TBC

General information

This course introduces large-scale public genomic databases and computational genomics tools. Participants will explore key resources, including the GWAS and PGS Catalogs, and learn how to integrate these data with functional genomics tools. Particular attention is given to linking genomic data with electronic health records, biobank-scale datasets and polygenic scores. After the course, participants receive a curated guide to essential genomic databases and tools.

3Teach the teacher Genetics📅 Fri 11 June 2027📍 TBC

General information

A highly interactive workshop for genetic & rare disease professionals early in their teaching careers, and for experienced professionals who never received formal training in educational development. Participants are introduced to the basic concepts of education development and work in small groups, guided by expert genetic teachers, to design their own interactive genetic education activity.

4On the Ethics and Strategies for Public Engagement in Genomics📅 Fri 11 June 2027📍 TBC

General information

this course explores how genomics professionals can engage the public in a meaningful and responsible way. It combines ethical reflection on public engagement with practical, dialogue-based strategies drawn from the experience of DNA Dialogues. The course also looks ahead to emerging areas where societal engagement is essential, such as access to gene therapies. Designed to be both reflective and hands-on, it connects education, ethics and practice.

AEuropean Undiagnosed Hackathon: The Harbour Hackers Edition🏫 Organised by Erasmus MC & the Wilhelm Foundation📅 Fri 11 June 2027📍 Erasmus MC, Rotterdam

General information

On Friday 11 June 2027, the day before the ESHG 2027 conference in Rotterdam, Erasmus Medical Center (Erasmus MC) and the Wilhelm Foundation are hosting the European Undiagnosed Hackathon at Erasmus MC, in collaboration with ESHG, ERDERA/ERNs and ECHO.

Multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, laboratory specialists and bioinformaticians will work together on patients with an undiagnosed rare disease. For each selected family, new sequencing data will be generated especially for this hackathon using state-of-the-art technologies.

We invite clinicians to submit patients who are still without a diagnosis. We are looking for:

  • Patients with a strong suspicion of an underlying genetic disorder, in whom no genetic cause has been found
  • A negative exome, and no prior genome sequencing (either short- or long-read)
  • DNA available from the patient and both parents, and from affected siblings if applicable
  • A submitting clinician who will attend the hackathon in Rotterdam to present the case and provide clinical input to the team
⭐
Priority will be given to patients from low- and middle-income countries in Europe, and to families with multiple affected children, consanguineous parents, or a clinical suspicion where long-read sequencing may add value (for example when a single variant has already been identified in a recessive gene, or in case of a suspected repeat expansion or structural variant).

Registration information

A selection committee will review all submissions, and we will contact you about the outcome. Informed consent from the family will be required; further information on this will be provided for selected cases.

Please do not include any directly identifying patient information in the submission form.
